Wilderness 40

A blueprint is a lifelong work — a single piece to be completed over a lifetime. To become “one” is to keep searching for ways of connection. Along the open field, I set aside the blueprint for a while, letting myself wander through space — seeking a line of balance amid the rises and falls. Turning back, waiting, persisting; walking itself becomes a way of measurement. The starting point of the work was an attempt to measure the width of a meadow. I used packing tape laid across the grass as the measuring method. When night fell, the tape left a glowing line in the darkness, forming the first part of the creation. As I retrieved the tape, traces of the grass were recorded upon it, and I rolled it into a circular grass sphere. This was a process of condensation — merging beginning and ending, body and landscape, movement and texture. In this manner, I walked across the field for nearly forty days, gathering the tactile journey of that period into one continuous work.

2022–2023 Walking

The work traces paths from 2022 to 2023, documenting walking experiences across regions like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. I use copper sheets as recording tools, leaving imprints during walks to reveal the journey’s trajectories. At the same time, photography captures everyday scenes and fragments. Photos combined with copper sheet traces present a fusion of time and space. By accumulating these copper sheet images annually, the work displays the individual’s external memories in time and space.

Using the rubbing of shoes and the floor as a way of polishing the mirror, when stepping on the copper plates, the sound of the steps were amplified, reminding me of the rhythm: walking, polishing and falling off. Afraid of falling off of the copper plates at the moment and consolidated at every step, the copper plates fell off became memories of collection. After getting used of the rhythm and free from the fear of losing the copper plates, I felt relaxed to walk through and happy to see what was around.

By hiking, the artist polished a piece of bronze mirror, aim at melting himself into the nature, getting out of / abandoning the walls and welcoming the world. Climbing up the mountain, unloading some weight and in exchange of a song. Interacting on the same altitude. No accumulation, only mark is left. They call it a club, we call it a paradise.

Climbing up a mountain On the grassland, climbing up a mountain. At the foot of the hill, desire always exists; crossing boundaries from one edge to another, moving from one group of people to the next. Climbing up a mountain, rubbing a mirror. Some weight is set down in exchange for a song. Conversations unfold at the same elevation. Nothing is accumulated—only traces remain. They call this place a club; we call it paradise.

The reconstruction of a society brings change, this is a collective reveal and it forms a collective wound. We are facing the battle of confrontation and it forms a social structure. “In terms of performance, artwork reveals itself as a wound of the society; the performance is the social enzyme of its autonomy.” The inspiration of the artwork is from Selected Writings: vol. 4. in “Theses on the Philosophy of History of Walter Benjamin who talked about the paintings of Paul Klee (1879-1940). New angel stands here and now, ahead of the future and facing layers of ruins of the past, waiting for the salvation to come. Salvation is here and now, standing here and now to review history and fragments of wound. Waken up by the past and transform the fragmented memory so as to reflect the shining aura. The artwork reveals Hong Kong’s scene from the viewpoint of new angel, e.g. combines buildings, natural landscape with imagination to detach this familiar structure. Using the way of flowing abstract to disperse the strangeness in familiarity, signature buildings and symbols. By destroying the signature and symbols, freedom is restored. We are looking at Hong Kong and associating with places outside Hong Kong.

Spin, rotate, revolve, change, transform, alter, transit, evolve, renew, renovate, advance, revolution. Scattered, light and shadow of the fragments, lighthouse directs. When mirror drops, fragments scatter and time and life start. They sink. Re-combination of the mirror needs miracle. Try hard to collect the scattered fragments, and then, wait for miracle to come. Light come from one, project to the machine, rotate and reflect, light scatter and become the revolving world. The process is irreversible.

Light in the Dark (Combination 7)

Light in the Dark is the searching of light in cities, contrasting with the source of light inside our heart. Art, which always shine in vain, is the moment where truth reveals. On the surface, all are forced together to surrender and become a value. Light-spots in the dark, is the stories of all hopes and frustrations. Light is tiny, but it shines to exist. It struggles to beam in weakness; in such a yeasty process, you own your body specifically. Place the limited all in your hand into the hollow space. Such encounter sparkles vividly in the arena of darkness.

Grassland

Grasslands at night are huge and mysterious, as if they could embrace the whole world, and as if there is another world (the inner world). I was surrounded by the grasslands at night which is a hide and also a protection. Step-by-step I walk into the darkness, leaving traces of the light. This is a ruler of consciousness which measures the distance of darkness; it can also be a line that divides the earth, or gather into a river, glittering.

WaitingWaiting

Waiting

Leaving and retrieving. Where can I put my heart? Leave her in the city, her heartbeat becomes regular and she is also like a box full of stuff, or should I put her in the silent nature, waiting to be filled. Therefore, I hide the canvas in the nature and wait for its reveal. What I can decide are the size, colour of the canvas and the place and time to leave it. Leave part of my body in the nature and synchronize with it; the nature will respond with a unique trace.

More than thirty participants waited actively, looking for a secret garden in their own living spaces. A painting is left outdoors for 4 days, even 40 days, collecting fallen leaves and insects. The traces witness the transformation of time and the process of material decay — existence turning toward non-existence. Part of the self is set down, allowing nature to flow through the work. Animals unexpectedly joined, leaving scratches and dug earth. The work is a collaborative trace of people, animals, and nature.

Original — Loss (Level 5)Original — Loss (Level 5)

Original — Loss (Level 5)

This series of works explores the relationship between creation, repetition, and use. Creation begins in the initial scene, where images undergo processes of duplication, recomposition, and reuse. Through this continuous reproduction, the original imagery gradually dissolves into the textures of layered information. The essence of digitization lies in preserving “reality,” yet its inherent fluidity and the constant influx of external data give rise to a chaotic interplay where the real and the illusory intertwine. This state evokes the biblical metaphor of the Tower of Babel — humankind gathering language and resources to create miracles, yet confined by the fractures between language and understanding. In entrusting our fundamental reality to technology, we exchange it for a more “authentic” yet more disoriented existence.

The Lost of Land (Level 4)The Lost of Land (Level 4)

The Lost of Land (Level 4)

From Choi Yuen Village life to consumerism in Causeway Bay. This piece explores land use: from the private use of land to its disappearance; from village life to popular consumerism. Different land uses are revealed on the same ground. Presented in repeated and unlimited reflecting structure, the origin of content starts losing, and finally time and place become its main content. The lost of the origin reveals “Forgetting the Existence”. The process of becoming lost is built up layer by layer. The process of creation and exhibition follows the same principle: layer by layer, the work is gradually unveiled and brought into view. “Within the twofold world of *Imaginary Blueprint*, the ‘Tower of Babel’ represents the structural point of origin of the city and of instrumental rationality.” Here, primordial nature is separated, located, and stored. This work is a microcosm of that systematizing process: once the original land is handed over to technology’s binary codes, reality is thoroughly simplified through countless acts of “replication and retransference,” becoming a journey of discovery and loss within civilization.

Dissolved CityDissolved City

Dissolved City

Dissolved, shapes set down, washed, space flowing out. The solid structure dissolves. Flow, solidify, flow; combine, decompose, combine. Dissolving is not disappearance, but entering the blood, running into a stiffened body. Time, idea, knowledge, rule, structure, system, morality, religion, institution, confrontation, revolution — all dissolved. Read the world with one as the integer. A world that does not need security advances by courage and faith.

From fragments to a whole, the puzzle forms a visual composition where each unit grows like a seed, bridging the unconscious and conscious to reveal an unknown blueprint. The unity of the Tower of Babel is a combination of language and technology, embodying the highly collective power of humanity. On the one hand, it demonstrates humanity’s capacity to transcend its own limitations; on the other, it also reveals the absolute limits of collective human power: the height of the tower cannot ultimately be compared with the height of the sky. In our fascination with knowledge and technology, we have obscured the sacred dimension. 2000 Hong Kong Art in Paris (UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France)
